Mission

AYOOL exists to empower youth of underrepresented populations and socio-economically disadvantaged households to thrive in STEM.

Take a look at some interesting statistics

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations are in high demand and continue to be among the fastest growing within the 21st century workforce across the US economy (BLS, 2017). And yet, despite comprising 27% of the US Population, only 11% of science and engineering jobs are held by Black, Latinos, and Native American workers (NSF, 2018).

Youth in low socioeconomic and disadvantaged households statistically lack exposure to and opportunities for STEM careers. Many of these youth belong in school districts which receive less aid and resources which could enable the students to perform better in STEM related courses.

As a result of this, these youth are less likely to be competitive for STEM careers. A lack of role models and mentors in this area also impede the potential for interest in STEM careers.

Our Solution

To address the problem, AYOOL will empower youth from underrepresented populations and socio-economically disadvantaged households thrive in STEM through our four-fold programs or S.T.E.M. The AYOOL S.T.E.M. programs include Scholarship, Technology, Education and Mentorship. AYOOL’s goal is to work collaboratively with teachers and administrators within partner high schools in these districts to bridge this gap and empower these youth to have the opportunities and resources required to thrive in STEM. The AYOOL approach to achieving this goal is through adoption of partner high schools in the Greater Houston Area.

“When I thought about college applications and going off to college, the question of how I would pay for college usually followed. I am deeply honored to be a recipient of the Difference Maker Scholarship from The Ayooluwatunde Akeredolu Foundation. It has been a great joy to attend Texas A&M University without financial constraints. Even more, AYOOL emphasizes that there are numerous people who support me. I am consistently reminded that several individuals are rooting for my success. I am grateful that with AYOOL’s assistance, I am fulfilling my lifelong dream of becoming an electrical engineer. Thank you AYOOL for being a pillar of support for my success; I am and will always be grateful.” – Joy Ekeruche
